Box Tracking During Relocation

During a home move, the most valuable inventory is one that instantly answers: “Which box contains my essential items right now?” Design a simple numbering scheme and record box by box; there is no need to catalog every disposable supply.

Pre-Packing Preparation

1. Create a dedicated temporary grove—such as “Relocation 2026”—or designate a moving zone in an existing grove.
2. Label physical cardboard boxes with unique IDs—such as “Box 01”—written prominently on multiple sides.
3. In MononoMori, create matching locations for each physical box—such as “Box 01 · Kitchen Cookware”. Locations support sub-locations, so you can create one “Moving” location and add each box as a sub-location under it. On the free plan you can have up to 3 groves, 10 locations and 30 items; with many boxes, group box numbers by room or become a Forest Guardian to remove the limits.
4. Do a quick test run with one high-priority box to confirm you can retrieve it effortlessly via search or the Items tab.

Recording Box by Box

1. Keep only one box’s inventory workflow open at a time.
2. Log primary contents using distinct names.
3. Assign each item’s location to the corresponding box number.
4. Photograph fragile or valuable contents, adding “Fragile” or “Unpack First” in notes.
5. Save and search the box identifier to verify that contents appear in the intended location.

“Continuous Planting Mode” speeds up entry. After each save it clears the name, Its Little Story, photos, attachments, batches and linked items, and keeps the category, location, tags, quantity, dates, status and custom fields. Check the name and location before saving each item, and change the location when you move to the next box, so belongings aren’t registered to the wrong carton.

Transit & Unpacking

• Cross-check physical boxes against your digital box list before moving trucks depart.
• Upon arrival at the new home, search for essentials by keyword to identify the exact box immediately.
• As items are unboxed and placed into permanent cabinets, update their locations in MononoMori.
• Once a box is completely emptied, delete its location. Deleting a location also deletes its sub-locations and every item in it, and those items do not go to the Recycle Bin, so first make sure everything in the box has been moved to its new location.
• To move a whole box of items to the same new location, multi-select them in the Items tab and use “Transplant”. Afterwards, search for a few of them to confirm the new location.

Post-Move Cleanup

Verify that all belongings are settled in their permanent locations. Once a temporary box has zero linked items, remove the temporary location. Do not delete a box location just because the physical box is open: deleting a location deletes its sub-locations and all items in it, and those items do not go to the Recycle Bin. If a temporary moving grove was created, review it for any unresolved or misplaced items before archiving or deleting it. Deleting a grove deletes all its locations and their items, which also skip the Recycle Bin, so move out anything you want to keep first.

Backing Up Before Moving

Before overhauling locations and reorganizing spaces en masse, generate a complete backup under “More” > “Data” and export a copy to the Files app. See Forest Backup & Restoration for full guidance.
